About Mikael Avatar

Mikael Avatar Stjernvall is a Swedish Paralympic world record holder, resilience coach, speaker and artist based in Thailand. Born clinically dead for 45 minutes with cerebral palsy, he went on to break the long jump world record at the Atlanta Paralympics in 1996. After moving to Thailand in 2009 he became pain-free for the first time in 40 years and developed the Mikael Avatar Method. He has over 20,000 coaching hours and has spoken to 300,000+ people since 1993. Avatar is his legal name.

Yes. Avatar is Mikael's legal name, printed in his passport. He adopted it as a reflection of his core belief: that every person carries an inner, unbreakable version of themselves — their true avatar — buried under years of conditioning, fear, and social masks. His mission is to help people find that version of themselves.

Mikael Avatar Stjernvall broke the Paralympic long jump world record at the Atlanta Olympic Stadium in 1996 with a jump of 4.98 metres, competing in the T36 cerebral palsy class. He held the world record for nearly 12 years. He achieved this after 15,000 hours of training, in front of 68,000 spectators.

Mikael lives in Rayong, Thailand, where he has been based since 2009. He coaches clients worldwide via Zoom in English and Swedish, and speaks at virtual and in-person events globally. He moved to Thailand after discovering that the warm climate eliminated the chronic pain caused by his cerebral palsy — something no treatment in Sweden had achieved in 40 years.

It is Mikael's personal motto — and it is not a metaphor. He was born without a pulse for 45 minutes after his biological father attacked his pregnant mother. Doctors predicted he would never walk, talk or live independently. Instead he became a Paralympic world record holder, Atlantic sailor, artist and coach who has guided thousands of people to transformation. Six words that compress an entire biography.

He is best known for three things: the world record (Paralympic long jump, Atlanta 1996), the 1% Method (a coaching system for sustainable transformation), and his story — born dead, chronic pain, world record, homelessness, Thailand, pain-free, rebuilt from zero. He was also the first coach Jim Beach of the SBA Award-winning School for Startups Radio ever gave a perfect score to on his Quick-10 segment.

The 1% Method & Mikael Avatar Method

The 1% Method is built on a simple but profound insight: you do not need to change everything to change your life. You only need to find the right 1% — one small shift in one automatic habit — and it starts a chain reaction that changes everything else. Mikael discovered this in Thailand in 2009 when micro-adjustments in his daily routine led to his first pain-free day in 40 years.

The Mikael Avatar Method combines four elements: self-observation (seeing your automatic patterns clearly), the 1% shift (finding the one change that triggers a chain reaction), the golden day (a daily 5–20 minute intentional morning practice), and avatar resurrection (the process of removing the masks we wear to reconnect with who we actually are). It is built from 14 years of personal diaries and 20,000+ coaching hours.

A Golden Day is a daily practice where, in the first 5–20 minutes after waking, you consciously plan the best version of the day ahead aligned with your goals and values — and then act on it. Mikael has tracked 6,200+ consecutive Golden Days. The practice sounds simple. Most people discover it is one of the hardest things they have ever done consistently.

The Avatar Resurrection App is a 180-day daily guide built entirely from Mikael's own diaries and coaching notes — evidence-based, one step at a time. It starts at day one with one minute of silence. It is designed specifically for the person who feels they cannot take any more, not for the person who is already thriving. It trains the brain the same way athletic training trains the body: gradually, consistently, undeniably.

Coaching & Transformation

The typical client is a leader, entrepreneur or high-achiever who has built a life that looks successful from the outside — the LinkedIn profile, the income, the recognition — but feels empty or stuck on the inside. They have tried everything else. They have lost hope. Mikael describes them as "people who are half alive and half on autopilot." His clients have included bus drivers, CEOs, military officers, artists, athletes and executives from global companies.

The signature program is 12 weeks. It is 100% tailored — no templates, no group format. Mikael personally selects each client. Only 8–10 spots are available per year. There is also a 3-session introductory package for those who want to experience the method before committing to the full program.

Mikael coaches in both English and Swedish. All sessions are conducted via Zoom. He works with clients worldwide regardless of timezone.

After working with Mikael, clients consistently report: making decisions faster and with greater clarity; knowing their limits and saying no more clearly; feeling more connected to who they actually are; and living the life they always knew they could create. Leopold, a Master Sergeant with 30 years in the Swedish Armed Forces, said: "He is arguably the best coach I have ever had. You get 100% dividend." George, a coordinator of large international theater and opera productions, said: "The tools I now have give me the confidence to always be able to go wherever I want. I see completely different road choices."

Speaking & Podcasts

Mikael's core speaking topics include: resilience and breakthrough leadership (using his Paralympic story as a framework for performance under pressure), inner freedom vs. external success (why high-achievers feel empty and what to do about it), the 1% Method (practical tools for creating transformation without overhauling your life), and conscious transformation (moving from automatic patterns to intentional living). His talks are described as emotionally unforgettable and practically actionable.

Yes. Virtual engagements are Mikael's primary format for 2025–2026. He speaks at corporate webinars, virtual leadership summits, online conferences and podcast recordings from his base in Thailand. Virtual fees start at $2,500. For booking inquiries contact his agent Saeed Miah at podcastguestagent.com or visit the speaking page.

Mikael Avatar Stjernvall. He scored the first-ever 100% on Jim Beach's Quick-10 on the SBA Award-winning School for Startups Radio. His story — born clinically dead for 45 minutes, diagnosed with cerebral palsy, Atlantic sailor, Paralympic world record holder, homeless, pain-free in Thailand, 20,000 coaching hours — creates genuinely rare conversations for leadership, resilience, entrepreneurship and transformation podcasts. He has appeared on 40+ podcasts including School for Startups Radio, Entrepreneurs Are Leaders, Your Brand Amplified and more.

Three things. First, his story cannot be fabricated — born clinically dead, 40 years of chronic pain, world record, homeless, rebuilt from zero in Thailand. Second, his message is the opposite of motivation: "Don't build the business around what you know. Build it around what you survive." Third, he coaches 1:1 from lived experience rather than theory. As he said on School for Startups Radio: "My CP is worth gold when I help my clients change their lives."

Art & Performance

Avatar Flame is Mikael's visual art practice — an extension of his coaching philosophy expressed through painting, colour and energy. He has created 100+ original works, held exhibitions in Sweden, Bangkok and Thailand, and created a permanent mural at CET School in Rayong. His paintings have never been returned. He describes painting as "what cannot be coached and cannot be said — only transferred." Visit the Avatar Flame gallery.

Yes. Mikael has absolute hearing and began musical training at age 7 under Abdo — a world-renowned composer who wrote Saudi Arabia's national anthem in 1947 and whose cousin was President Anwar Sadat. Mikael performed a grand piano concert at age 17. After moving to Thailand he resumed music composition and has created original work including music for relaxation CDs. His music is copyright protected.
